A holiday at The Old House Nova Gorica presents the perfect opportunity to combine the very best of the area. The apartment is in the peaceful village of Orehovlje, immersed in the magnificent natural beauty of western Slovenia yet just 15 minutes by car from the cultural attractions of Nova Gorica and within easy reach of the coast.

The Solkan Bridge spans the Soča river which runs through the town
Nova Gorica and surroundings – cultural attractions
Nova Gorica is Slovenia’s youngest town, founded in 1948. The old town of Gorica (today Gorizia) was assigned to Italy and the new modern town of Nova Gorica started to take shape. The town is renowned for its multiple rose bushes and in fact has the second largest collection of Bourbon Roses in Europe. Over the centuries, it has been shaped by Germanic, Romance and Slavic influences but today it feels like a cosmopolitan city, with outstanding restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and a casino culture.
Spanned by the Solkan railway bridge, the largest stone arch in the world, the dazzling Soča river (the ‘Emerald Beauty’) is a good place to start exploring the region’s history and culture. Above the river, Sabotin hill is the perfect starting point for delving into the past. The hill is punctuated with systems of ditches and caverns built by the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies, but it also provides superb views over Sveta Gora, the Vipava Valley, the Karst and the Julian Alps.

Castles are always fun for kids and there are plenty to choose from! Just across the border into Italy, 11th century Gorizia Castle is now home to the Museum of the Middle Ages. And 13th century Rihemberk Castle, 20 minutes from Nova Gorica, is a superb showpiece of Karst architecture and culture. A little further afield, Predjama castle and Postojna cave are less than an hour’s drive away and easily do-able together in one day. For more castles – and some excellent wine-tasting! – head into the Vipavaska valley.
Nova Gorica – for outdoor activities
Start by exploring your local surroundings with a pleasant 20-minute walk from the apartment to Monastery Kostanjevica. Leave your walk till early evening and you have a good chance of being treated to some splendid sunset views. A more intense hiking trail with great views leads to Sveta Gora (682m) where there’s a Franciscan monastery and a restaurant.
For fantastic hiking and cycling, as well as more adventurous activities, including rafting, kayaking, ziplining and climbing, head to the River Soča where the Soča Fun Park is an added attraction for kids.

Coastal attractions
Join the locals from Nova Gorica and head for the Italian coastal towns of Sistiana and Devin for a day at the seaside.
Eating and drinking
For a truly authentic experience, head to one of the many local farms where you’ll find a whole host of superb culinary and wine-tasting experiences. Close to the apartment, some of our favorite restaurants include Tavern Ošterija Žogica in Solkan, and in Nova Gorica, Bar Fabrika for gin and burgers, and Rusa House for pizza.
