By removing a wall the owners created a lovely open plan living space that’s more appealing to today’s families than the cramped rooms that once existed here. The grayish tones of the walls, floor (bleached oak wood) and ceiling mimic the colors of the original stonework but you’ll notice playful splashes of color here, as well as in the other rooms of this holiday home in Istria, Croatia.

Modern furniture provides comfy places to sit and relax, read a book or play family games, and there’s a large flatscreen TV with plenty of channels to watch, and a DVD player. The fireplace is great if you’re visiting during the cooler months.

From the living room, doors open out to the terrace—more on that in a moment—while at the other end of the space is the modern kitchen, crafted with a blend of materials including Istrian stone, Kirmenjak stone and solid oak.

All the appliances you should need are included here – an induction cooker, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, fridge and washing machine, and of course there are all the plates, dishes, cutlery and cooking utensils provided.

The kitchen island doubles as a dining table with its four chairs, but much of the time guests like to dine outside on the terrace during the summer.

A door from the kitchen leads to the very useful powder room with toilet and sink – great for families so you don’t have to traipse upstairs all the time.

Masonry stairs rise up to the first floor and were designed to look like some of the local processed stone, named “stokani kamen”. Due to the open nature of the stairs we recommend that parents of younger children take care of them around the stairs.

Go upstairs and you’ll find two good sized bedrooms and a modern bathroom. In the Master Bedroom there’s a double bed and lots of storage for you to put away your clothes and other belongings.

A wall mounted air conditioning unit helps to keep the bedroom cool during the summer while the small windows and thick walls create a warm and cozy ambiance in the winter months.

The second bedroom has been designed with kids in mind. It’s a fun and playful space with a bunk bed, a desk and room to play, and it’s made all the more friendly by the resident stuffies!

There’s a spacious closet for hanging your clothes, and air conditioning to keep it cool.

The bathroom is an excellent example of modern meets traditional. It has a rustic feel thanks to the large slab of stone on the vanity, and the exposed stone wall in the shower, yet it’s 100% modern with a beautiful vessel sink, great walk-in shower and a dual-flush toilet. Note that there is no bath in this Vrsar holiday home.

Open the French doors and let the outside in, or spend much of your time enjoying the weather on the terrace. The terrace has a lovely Mediterranean feel with the scent of herbs, bay leaves, lavender, passion flower, and lemon and olive trees, and there’s a solid teak wood table and chairs to make use of.
